Not So Secret Show
Yesterday, I spent the whole day at 94/9’s Day Out events. I started early at HOB for Garett’s broadcast, where a decent crowd (considering it was early on a Saturday morning) hung out and listened to the Prayers and the Bloody Hollies play. It was really mellow and social (people dropped in and out including my fellow bloggers in crime, Cat Dirt and SD Dialed in Rosey), so that was cool. Then I took a break for a bit before the main event at 4th and B. I kinda got there early and ended up standing on the corner of 3rd and B with Garett giving out the rest of the tickets he had. When I finally got inside, the crowd was sparse, but Garett kept us entertained with his selection of music (OMG, Prince’s “Starfish and Coffee” from “Sign of the Times”!!!) and Roger arrived at some point to keep me company.
We went up front to check out iSociety!, who are a great local band. They actually reminded me of one of my favorite bands from NOLA, Galactic. iSociety! are a total spectacle - dancers, a horn section and a congo drummer in addition to your standard guitars, bass and drums. If you were on the floor and not dancing your a$$ off, you totally missed the point.
The headliner was Silversun Pickups, which was supposed to be a secret, but it wasn’t. Their success story is incredible considering they are on an indie label (Dangerbird). I’ll talk about that more next week when I post the alt rock top whatever, so back to the show. Setlist first…

It was nice that they got to play a full set. The last two times I had seen them, they were openers, so they played short (but tight) sets. “Well Thought Out Twinkles” is such a good opener and it really set the stage for how they were going to rawk our world. Brian was super talkative and appreciative of the crowd. At some point, he joked around with Nikki and did a cute bit with her that was straight out of “Computer Blue”. (Only you Prince fans will get that.... Wendy? Yes Lisa. Is the water warm enough? Yes Lisa. Shall we begin? Yes Lisa ). I was in heaven during the three song set of “Little Lover’s So Polite”, “Future Foe Scenarios” and “Kissing Families”. Those songs are so incredibly strong live. Of course the crowd went crazy during “Lazy Eye”. After “Common Reactor”, they came out to do an encore of songs off Pikul (which I have but can’t seem to find to figure out what that first song was.) They ended with “Creation Lake” which features Nikki on vocals. Awesome.
After the show, there were lots of things going on, but I opted to hang with Trav in OB. Midori and her boyfriend came out as well so we had a nice time together. And that is all she wrote. I need to get motivated to get some bfast with a friend who is in town and then spend the rest of my day writing Music Mondays and Hot Picks. Hope everyone had a good weekend.
