Day One: Show One
Day One of the five day show extravaganza brought me to the Brand New show at the HOB Las Vegas. It’s a great place to see a show despite the fact it is owned by a souless corporation. I’ve decided that whenever I am at a HOB that I am not spending any money that doesn’t go to the artist, so that means I was a sober girl during the show. Which was fine. I had gone to dinner with my Texas Dude and some coworkers and got there a couple songs into their set. I found a good perch stage left and was all set. Mixed crowd in there but I was happy that there were a lot of fans who were singing every word. Jesse was really on fire and talking up a storm. Good stuff. They played for a little over an hour, mostly playing material from their last two albums. But there were definitely some old school fans there because when they played “Shower Scene” and “No Seatbelt Song”, there were plenty of people singing along. I was happy to hear a lot of my favorites - “Degausser” from their new album was really good. When the stage lights went on, I was really bummed that they did not play “The Quiet Things That No One Knows”, but was consoled by walking right up to the sound guy and getting the set list:
After the show, I met up with the aforementioned Texas Dude and co-workers and proceeded to have a couple of drinks (or more) and danced my a$$ off at Rum Jungle in Mandalay. So not my type of music or crowd, but I was kinda like “F*** it, have some fun.” And I did. I haven’t danced like that in a loooooong time. Definitely a good way to start my early weekend.
So I have a quick thing for this work conference I am here for this morning, and then on a plane home to get stuff done before heading out to see Brand New again at SOMA. Since that will be done early, I’ll probably hit Ken Club to catch Vinyl Radio and The Muslims. Or even maybe Ari Shine at Beauty Bar. Too much good stuff going on.
Hope everyone has a great weekend!
